Back in 2018, The Workroom was entrusted by the City of London Corporation and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to support the rejuvenation plans for Petticoat Lane Market—a cultural melting pot with roots stretching from Huguenot weavers and Jewish tailors to Bangladeshi and African fabric sellers.
Our mission? To craft a brand identity that honours its storied history as one of the oldest East End markets while keeping it fresh and authentic.
Our approach was all about inclusivity, aiming to develop a new, recognisable yet relatable brand identity that resonates with the entire community—businesses, residents, and stallholders alike—placing Petticoat Lane Market firmly back on the ‘map’.
Through workshops and open dialogue, we made sure EVERY voice was heard. One message was clear: NO gentrification allowed. In response to this, we recommended community art and fashion workshops where handmade, diverse textiles were created to literally ‘weave into the brand’ for banners and more.
Tom Noble, Group Manager Public Realm, at the City of London Corporation, praised our inclusive approach: “The Workroom’s engagement strategy ensured all stakeholders, including hard-to-reach groups, felt a sense of ownership of the emerging brand”.
We’d love to hear about inclusive processes YOU have used—what’s worked well, and what’s been challenging?
